Fighting drugs: Kids need help

Jodi Switalski stalked the floor of the Marietta High School auditorium, speaking in turns with passion, sadness, humor and not a little anger.

The cavernous room gaped with empty seats. About 50 parents and educators were there to listen as Switalski, a lawyer, former prosecutor and judge, and now a speaker committed to helping people save their children’s lives, spoke about “Be The Change,” a program she and her partner Bob Stutman devised to help communities counter an illegal drug threat that Stutman described as the worst in American history.

Saturday, October 28, 2017 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue.   DEA prescription drug take back day According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.  

Turn in your unused or expired prescription medication for safe disposal. Don’t leave them lying around your house for your kids or pets to consume!

Eastern Kentucky: The bull’s-eye of US opioid epidemic

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – Centering in on the opioid epidemic in Eastern Kentucky.

Former Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent, Robert Stutman, said the key to fighting the opioid crisis is educating doctors and kids. Monday, Stutman talked with community leaders in Letcher County about tackling opioid addiction in Appalachia. Stutman said the bullseye of the opioid epidemic in the United States is in Eastern Kentucky, due to several factors.

“It’s generally rural, doctors tend to prescribe a lot of opioids, people get hurt on the job, they start opioids and they become addicts,” said Robert Stutman, Former Special Agent in Charge New York, Drug Enforcement Agency.

Opioid Crisis Conference Held in Panama City

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – According to a former Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent, 40 percent of Americans use opioids, which are highly addictive.

The Stutman Switalski Group partnered with Emerald Coast Medical Association, a group of physicians and speakers met on October 14, 2017 in Panama City to discuss the opioid crisis and what they can do to help put an end to it.

Robert Stutman was one of the keynote speakers at the opioid crisis conference held at the Holiday Inn in Panama City Saturday. He’s a former DEA Special Agent, at one time he was the head of the DEA’s largest office in New York. Pablo Escobar once had targeted him for assassination.

Judge Jodi Debbrecht Switalski told us that one in three Americans surveyed blamed doctors for the current opioid overuse problem. A majority of people that become addicted arise from sports injuries and wisdom teeth extractions after which it is not unusual to receive a refillable prescription for thirty Vicodin. Many people claim their physicians don’t advise them that Vicodin may be habit-forming. Wouldn’t it be wise to inform patients of all risks when prescribing painkillers? Judge Jodi said that doctors should 1.Inform 2. Monitor and 3. Document the process of making patients fully aware of both the benefits and risks of any medical treatment.
